거액의 로또 복권 당첨 사실을 남편 등 가족에게 숨기고 있다는 여성이 등장, 화제를 낳고 있다.

3년 전 약 150,000파운드(약 26억원)에 달하는 거액의 로또 복권에 당첨된 ‘제인’이라는 이름의 여성이 화제의 주인공.

제인은 '가족의 행복'을 위해 복권 당첨 사실을 남편 등 가족에게 숨겼다고 밝혔는데, 당첨 사실이 알려지면 남편이 일을 그만두고 나쁜 길에 빠져 들까봐 걱정하고 있다고.

‘제인’은 최근 영국 BBC 5 라디오 방송에 출연, 이 같은 충격적인 사실을 털어놓았다. 제인의 남편은 15년 전 약물 중독에 빠진 전력이 있는데, 로또 당첨이 들통(?)나면 다시 약물 등에 빠지지 않을까 하는 걱정이 있다는 것이 제인의 설명.

그녀는 당첨 후에도 여전히 생업에 종사하고 있으며, 2명의 자녀에게도 당첨 사실을 비밀로 하고 있다고 밝혔다. 로또 당첨으로 인해 아이들의 평온한 삶이 깨지기를 원치 않는다는 것이 그녀의 설명.

제인의 사연은 BBC 외에도 일간 스코츠맨, 채널 4 등 영국 언론을 통해 보도되었는데, 복권 회사 관계자는 제인의 주장에 대해 공식 언급을 내놓지 않고 있다고 언론은 전했다.

Woman 'conceals £1.5m lotto win'

A woman has told a radio phone-in she won £1.5m on the lottery but has never told anybody - not even her husband.
He once had a drug problem and she had feared "with the money and perhaps the high life... he would go back there", she told BBC Radio Five Live.

The woman, who gave her name as Jane, said that in the three years since the win she claimed to get bonuses so "now and again I can have nice things".

Lottery operator Camelot could not confirm the woman's story.

Presenter Victoria Derbyshire had been hosting a phone-in on the question: "Is money guaranteed to make you happy?"

The caller said: "It's nice because I know I haven't got to worry about bills.

"One of the little white lies is that I've cut my hours down at work but I tell [my husband] I work from home for the other two days."

She added: "I do feel if I had said, yes, I've won this money, that he would have wanted holidays, he perhaps would have wanted to give up work, which would destroy our little family unit we've got now.

"I feel terribly guilty in one way, but in another way, we've got two young children and I think, well, if their lives change dramatically then it's not fair on them.

"So I just want to keep things as they are."
